The Cannery Launches Certified Organic Farmers Market in San Francisco on May 14
San Francisco, CA May 12, 2004 –- Fresh Organic Fruit and Vegetables, Fresh-cut flowers, Baked Goods and Salmon. The Cannery, San Francisco's historic marketplace, launches The Cannery Farmers Market at Del Monte Square. Over 25 hand-picked small family farmers will sell a wide variety of seasonal, farm fresh organic fruits and vegetables as well as fresh-cut field flowers, potted flowers and orchids directly to the public. This certified organic market will also feature wild salmon from the Alioto-Lazio Fish Company, San Francisco's premier fish (never farmed) provider and Cedar Creek Smoked Salmon featuring smoked wild salmon filets, as well as smoked salmon sausages and cakes.
The Cannery Farmers Market at Del Monte Square opens Friday, May 14, 2004 and Saturday May 15, 2004. The Market will take place on Fridays and Saturdays, year-round. The hours are 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
The market will feature organic fruits and vegetables (something that's grown organically is grown without toxic pesticides or fertilizers). Farmers at the market include Vanessa Bogenholm owner of VB Farms/Sunshine Organic who also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the California Certified Organic Farmers. Vanessa, an Organic Strawberry and Raspberry farmer, had this to say about the benefits of selling, "It's great when you can sell a product and you can see someone enjoy it rather than it being loaded onto a truck and ending somewhere." She adds, "You can feed your friends and family with confidence knowing that our berries are grown without damaging pesticides and fertilizers. By purchasing from us, you support a local business, protect the environment and get a product we know you will enjoy."
The Del Monte Square Courtyard, originally designed by legendary Thomas Church, has been improved to accommodate the farmers. Colorful custom-built market stalls, inspired by long-established outdoor markets in Europe and Asia will flank a granite pathway, which weaves between 140 year-old olive trees surrounded by lively outdoor cafes and restaurants. The Del Monte Square Courtyard's main stage will feature performers throughout the day. It is worth noting that the original plans for The Cannery in 1967 included a Farmers Market with very similar colorful stalls in the same Courtyard.
Dutch Watazychyn the manager for the market believes that in addition to the high quality products the atmosphere of the market will make it unique, "I've managed a number of markets. Right off the top the visual experience here is incredible," he adds, "The environment is what's going to make this market, that along with the quality of the produce the farmers will bring. It's designed primarily for locals we're going to reach all of our friends and neighbors in Telegraph Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill and in the Marina."
The Cannery is sending out a special invitation to the community, local businesses and San Francisco celebrities. Gary Danko and other northern waterfront chefs are expected to be on hand to meet the farmers and see their products.
"This is part of a committed effort to bring locals back to the Fisherman's Wharf area," said Christopher Martin, President of The Cannery at Del Monte Square. "This is our invitation to locals—‘We miss you.' It will be the first of many endeavors to cater to San Francisco and Bay Area residents with activities and uses that are appealing to them. Soon we will open strong neighborhood serving restaurants, and additional lively music and entertainment clubs. We are also searching for inspiring, non-chain retailers, such as an independent bookstore, that will contribute to our uniqueness and passion. It is our objective for The Cannery at Del Monte Square to be an enclave for creativity and entrepreneurial activity. The Farmers Market will be our anchor."
The Cannery, San Francisco's historic landmark shopping center, was built in 1907 and was once the world's largest fruit cannery, as Del Monte Plant #1. The Cannery is home to one of a kind specialty shops, galleries, restaurants, offices, jazz and comedy club, and live entertainment daily. The Cannery has been a family owned, family-run business since its inception and opening in November 1967. The Cannery is located at 2801 Leavenworth, at the foot of Columbus, overlooking the Bay.
